What is my Tax File Number?

A Tax File Number (TFN) is a distinctive 8 or 9 digit number which is issued by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to any taxpaying entity. You should apply for your TFN if you wish to apply for a job, lodge a tax return, apply for a business number or conduct many other activities with ATO and Australian Government.

Every working Australian holds a unique TFN, once it has been issued it will be yours for life, even if you change a job, leave Australia or change your personal details. You can apply for your own TFN once you reach 13 years, if a minor is below the age of 13, a parent or guardian can apply on behalf of the applicant. Non-residents, as well as Australian passport holders, must have a valid passport and additional documents in order to successfully submit the TFN application form.

Once you provide all the necessary documents your TFN will reach you in 28 days at your residential address. Unfortunately, if you do not hold a TFN your income will be deducted at the maximum rate of 47%. Remember to keep your TFN safe and protect your personal details.
